PUBLIC AGENDA

Tue, 19 Aug 1997 Source: --

The Public Agenda says the government has decided to sack the chief executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Mr Erasmus Kalitsi and the managing director of the Electricty Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr John Kobina Hagan, as part of of the government's efforts to distance itself from the now suspended increase in electricty tariffs which provoked intense nation-wide protest. Under the Headline: 'electricty tariffs saga, Kalitsi, Hagan to be sacked", the Public Agenda says both Mr Kalitsi and Mr Hagan surprised many people when their institutions meekly responded to President Rawlings' dramatic intervention in the tariff controversy. The paper says while privately furious, ECG and VRA officials publicly welcomed the Rawlings suspension of the increases though the VRA mildly hinted at the implications of the move. According to the paper, there is a section of public opinion which feels that Mr Kalitsi and Mr Hagan should have resigned as a matter of principle after President Rawlings deserted them and sought to make VRA and ECG the target of public anger.
