Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, General Secretary of the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU), has revealed that the Union will be suing the government in court over the severance package for workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) who will be rendered redundant in the privatisation of the state power distributor.

Last week, PUWU members embarked on a nationwide strike over the government’s failure to address the concerns of the workers of the ECG. However, the government, through the Ministry of Energy, assured the workers that their concerns will be addressed.

To that end, a meeting was scheduled between officials of the Energy Ministry and the leadership of PUWU. The meeting was held on Monday, October 2.

However, Mr Nyantekyi has revealed that the meeting did not address their main issues regarding the severance package. Therefore, they have decided to go to court to compel the government to come out with the severance package.

He told Accra News’ Obeng Mensah Katakyie on Tuesday, October 3 that: “We are going to court on the matter because it appears the government is unwilling to listen to our concerns.

“We held a meeting with the government and other stakeholders yesterday however, the meeting did not address our concerns and so the public should expect a court action from us.

“We want the court to settle the matter and compel the government to bring out the redundancy package.”
