Ghana’s Parliament has refuted circulating videos on social media that claim Speaker Alban Bagbin has been invited to a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding the Speaker's announcement to declare four seats vacant.

Dr. Lawrence Kwarteng-Ashia, Deputy Director for Media Relations, whose signature was appended to a statement released on October 22, 2024, urged the public to treat the video with the contempt it deserves.

The statement clarified that the video is part of attempts by certain individuals to tarnish the Speaker’s reputation, noting that it is an old video taken on July 4, 2024, when the Rt. Hon. Speaker led a delegation to present the inaugural Democracy Cup to the President.

“The attention of Parliament has been drawn to a video circulating on social media insinuating that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been invited to a meeting with the President to negotiate a settlement in respect of the pronouncement by the Rt. Hon. Speaker on Thursday, 17th October, 2024, in response to a call by the Minority Leader to declare the seats of four (4) Members of Parliament vacant,” parts of the statement read.

According to the statement, the attempts to mislabel the video and distort the facts to misinform the public and impugn Bagbin’s integrity are unfortunate.

It, therefore, debunked the claims, stating that there is no truth in the circulating video while cautioning the public to ignore such false narratives.

“Parliament states without any equivocation that there is no iota of truth in the insinuation in the circulated video.

“The attempt to wrongly label the video and twist facts to impugn the integrity of the Rt. Hon. Speaker and Parliament is not only disingenuous but unfortunate,” it added.
