Parliament has approved the Public Elections Regulations, 2012 (CI 75) which will give legal backing to the introduction of the biometric registration including verification of registered voters and other related matters.

CI 75 will replace the CI 15 which was used to conduct public elections since 1996.

The Constitutional Instrument was laid in the house on August 14 but was referred to the Committee on Subsidiary Legislations for consideration and report was subsequently laid before the house.

The leadership of parliament is commending the Electoral Commission and the Committee for carrying out their duties with distinction. The chairman of the committee, Osei Kwame Prempeh says they had no problem working on CI 75 because of the cooperation of the EC.

Meanwhile MP for Kumawu, Yaw Baah, is calling on the wants the arms of government to desist from interfering with the work of the EC.

“The EC must also guide judiciously the power that has been vested in it by Article 51 that the EC under circumstance should be subject to the direction of any other individual or whatever it is,” he said.

He said in the past the executive and the legislature have intruded in the operations of the EC; a situation that should not be allowed to happen.
