After months of extensive renovations, the Parliament of Ghana has reconvened in its official Chamber.

The newly-renovated Chamber, which underwent a €2.26 million retrofitting, was officially reopened on Thursday, December 19, 2024, with Members of Parliament resuming their duties in a modernised and upgraded environment.

Videos taken by GhanaWeb showed parliamentarians and some staff on the floor of the Chamber, admiring the work done.

The retrofitting work, which began in August 2024, involved replacing old cables, introducing new furniture, and upgrading audio-visual equipment to prevent future disruptions.

During the renovation period, Parliamentary sessions were temporarily held at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

The decision to relocate was necessitated by the extensive rewiring and refurbishment work being carried out in the Chamber.

The cost of the renovation was borne by the government of Ghana, with only damaged desks and worktables replaced.

New chairs were procured locally, and the old furniture was auctioned off. This approach aimed to balance modernisation with cost-effectiveness and local economic support.

The newly-renovated chamber now reportedly features a state-of-the-art conferencing system, allowing MPs to access votes, proceedings, order papers, committee reports, and parliamentary documents electronically.

This comes as Parliament prepares to hand over to the newly-elected Parliament after the December 7, 2024 elections.
