Parliament to sit this week end

Parliament is to sit this week-end, Saturday, December 13, to deliberate on the Constitutional Instrument, called the “District Electoral Areas and Designation of Units Instrument.”

The sitting is to enable the Instrument come into force at the expiration of 21 sittings days.

Mr Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, the Speaker, announced the week end sitting on the floor of the House on Friday ahead of the reading of the Business Statement for the seventh week. ending Friday, December 19.

According to the business statement, read by Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Ashaiman, the constitutional obligation imposed on Parliament had made it imperative for the House to extend sittings beyond the scheduled date of Friday, December 19, and rise indefinitely (sine die) on Monday, December 22.

“Right Honourable Speaker, the Business Committee implores all Honourable Members that as representatives of the people, the House should go the extra mile to fulfill the critical responsibility placed on Members of Parliament,” Mr Agbesi said.

The Deputy Majority Leader informed the House that the Minister of Youth and Sports was expected to brief the House on the financing of the Black Stars, Ghana’s national football team, during and after the 2014 World Cup tournament in Brazil, next Thursday.

Among the questions slated to be answered by sector Ministers are: when the distribution of subsidized fertilizers would start in the on-going 2014 season.

Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto MP for Kwadaso, would ask the Food and Agriculture Minister, what practical steps and policy measures the Ministry was taking to reduce the rising cost of the importation of basic food items like rice, cooking oil and poultry.

Mr Frank Annor Dompreh MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, would on Wednesday, December 17, ask the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, whether the parcel of land behind the Nsawam Cannery, with an Executive Instrument placed on it, has been leased out to a private individual or a corporate body.

Meanwhile, the House continues to debate the Budget Estimates for State agencies for the year ending December 2015.
