Parliamentary Committee On Youth And Sports Attends Workshop

A three-day workshop on the rights of the child for members of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture has ended at Akosombo. It was jointly organised by the Ghana National Commission on Children (GNCC) and the UN Children's Fund as a follow up to the first one held in December 1997. The workshop was aimed at sensitising the MPs on the purpose of a Children's Bill which will soon to be presented to Parliament as announced by President Rawlings in his Sessional Address to Parliament on Thursday, 15 January. Participants stressed the need for appropriate measures, including educational campaigns to prevent and combat all forms of discrimination against Children in the country. In a speech, the Executive Secretary of the GNCC, Mrs. Betty Akuffo-Amoabeng, stressed the need for the State to give priority to the development of a system of data collection and analysis with a view to addressing all areas of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, which Ghana ratified in 1990. The Chairman of the Committee on Youth, Sports and Culture, Mr. Moses Mabengba, expressed his gratitude to the organisers of the workshop. He gave the assurance that members of the Committee would provide the proper information to other MPs to ensure that the Children's Bill is passed by the House to protect the children of this country. gri
