A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Theophilus Dzimega Jnr, has called on Parliament to fast-track the passage of the long-delayed spousal rights law as a tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, November 28, 2025, Dzimega said such a move would honour Nana Konadu’s decades-long advocacy for women’s empowerment and legal reforms.

He argued that naming the legislation after her would reflect her significant impact on Ghana’s socio-legal development.

He noted that although Article 22 of the 1992 Constitution requires Parliament to enact laws on spousal property rights, the country has still not completed that legislative process.

“Both sides of the House should try and pass the spousal rights law. They should pass it in memory of her or make it Nana Konadu’s law or Konadu’s law,” he stated.

Dzimega suggested that Parliament could further institutionalise her legacy by supporting annual lectures on women’s rights, but stressed that her contributions should not be reduced to ceremonial recognitions.

He also encouraged efforts to involve her children in sustaining the work she championed.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was instrumental in championing the Intestate Succession Law of 1985 (PNDCL 111), which secured inheritance rights for spouses and children when a partner dies without a will.

The landmark reform, widely referred to as the ‘Nana Konadu Law,’ remains a defining feature of Ghana’s family-rights framework.
