Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Afoko, has appealed to the party’s Greater Accra Regional Executives to set aside emotions and throw their weight behind him as he bids to play a key role in the NPP’s recovery and return to power.

Afoko made the passionate appeal during his engagement with the Greater Accra Regional Executives on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

“But as leadership, heavy is the head that wears the crown. And you guys around this table wear the crown of Greater Accra. And heavy on your heads to think and put your emotions down and think,” he said.

He emphasised the need for strategic thinking and youth mobilisation to regain power in the 2028 general elections, describing it as a golden opportunity for the party.

“When it comes to emotions, we can get the young men and women who will go out there. They will shout the slogans. They will go on and do those things for us to move our people forward, to galvanise them, and to harness the youth, especially, so that we can regain power in the next general election. Because we have a golden opportunity. We have it. And we’ve done this before,” he said.

Afoko reminded the executives of the party’s 2016 success, when it defeated an incumbent president.

“In 2016, the sitting president didn’t get a second term straight away. We have another opportunity coming,” he stated.

He made a direct appeal for support, urging the executives to back him based on his track record.

“I have come to ask that you support me… I would just plead that, looking at my record, that I believe in results, that you find it in your hearts and minds… I appeal to your hearts and minds for the sake of power, that you back me,” he said.

Afoko stressed the importance of unity across the party, noting that many NPP sympathisers exist even in unexpected places.

“You go to Elubu, Nzima land, there are NPP people there. You go to Wa, you find NPP people. You go to Boko, they are there. But you don’t know them. They don’t know you. But we are all pulling in the same direction, and it’s power we want. Power so that we can affect the direction of our country,” he said.

He clarified that the pursuit of power is not for its own sake, but to positively impact Ghanaians.

“Power, not for the sake of power, but for its ability, its potential to positively affect the lives of our people and to change the direction of our country positively,” he stressed.

In a humble appeal, Afoko told the executives that even silent support would be appreciated.

“Then, I will plead with you, even if you cannot come out and say, I’m supporting you, I’m standing on the platform with you, I’m campaigning for you, but your prayer alone is good. Prayer is powerful. As I said at the beginning, we do everything, but we back it with prayer,” he said.

The former chairman’s engagement forms part of his ongoing consultations with party structures across the country as the NPP positions itself for rebuilding following its electoral defeat.
