A former Local Government Minister, Kwadwo Adjei Darko has said opposition NDC Flagbearer John Mahama’s proposal for incorporating Assembly members on the Public wage bill is not feasible.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, the former Minister argued that it’s only proper to improve the revenue base of the assembly for the assembly members to receive some emoluments.

The debate being advanced in favour of salaries for assembly members requires an Amendment of the Local Government Act.

Meanwhile, the President of Chamber of Local Governance, Dr. Richard Fiadormor has backed the position held by the former leader saying the assembly members deserve better.

For him, the call for the assembly members to be paid is laudable adding that the system ought to be tweaked to properly define their roles.

“It's possible to pay assembly members, because don’t forget they’re agents of development at the local level. If former President Mahama is championing this course, it’s important that we give him the support so he can make this a reality and improve the local governance system” he told sit-in host Akwasi Nsiah

Former President Mahama has promised that should he return to power come January 7, 2021, assembly members will be paid so that they can earn some income to make ends meet.

“This is going to be contained in our programme on governance when we come into government,” he said.
