Former National Democratic Congress(NDC) Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon Nii Amasah Namoale has accused the Chairperson of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante of being one of the persons orchestrating the removal of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei.
According to him, the revered Man of God, after officially issuing a statement which was seemingly neutral when the brouhaha at the EC started, subsequently made a pronouncement trying to shape the minds of the public that Charlotte Osei must be impeached.
It is unclear what pronouncement Nii Amasah Namoale is referring to, but Rev. Prof. Asante is reported by some online portals as calling on Charlotte Osei and her two deputies to resign when the accusations began.
The EC boss and two of her deputies Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services) on Monday appeared before the Chief Justice committee hearing their impeachment over allegations of mismanagement and incompetence at the commission.
The two deputies have accused their boss of financial mismanagement and poor leadership, an accusation she has rejected.
Both parties have been given three weeks by the Chief Justice to file their statement of response to the committee after which the hearing will continue.
Some individuals believed to be staff of the Commission in July 2017 petitioned the President to remove Mrs. Osei over alleged abuse of office, causing financial loss to the state and breaches of Ghana’s procurement laws.
The petition was subsequently forwarded to the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, as required by law, to establish a prima facie case based on which impeachment proceedings would commence against the EC chair.
Commenting on the development at the EC on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa FM Tuesday, Nii Amasah Namoale said it was unfortunate the Rev. Prof Asante has joined the tall list of persons who want Charlotte Osei thrown out of office.
“The moment he made those statement, I froze and I said this man is one of the orchestrators. I say so because the organization issued a beautiful statement and what came from him personally, one could see that he’s using the organization to shape the minds of Ghanaians so that if Charlotte Osei is removed, it will be like Charlotte Osei didn’t perform her duties well. But I’m happy that Charlotte Osei has been given the opportunity to speak to the issues raised against her.”
