The Peace Council of Ghana has backed the proposal by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to use the Ghana Card for the next registration of voters in the country.

Speaking to the media after an engagement with the EC on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, the Chairman of the Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, asserted that the current issues being seen in the country's electoral process are mainly due to Ghana not having a central identification system, and the Ghana Card serves that purpose.

He noted that the issue of foreigners entering the country's electoral register and gerrymandering would be a thing of the past if the Ghana Card is used as the sole document for voter registration.

He added that over 60 percent of voters who were registered during the limited voter registration exercise, held in April 2024, used the guarantor system, which is not the best.

"The reality is that until we accept the Ghana Card or one system as our form of registration, the issues will persist. The figures they gave us today showed that 63 percent of those who registered within this short period used the guarantor system, which is high. Those who used the Ghana Card are 39 percent. So, the whole system of busing people will continue.

"You bring people from a different constituency - if I think that this is my safe zone and I have enough votes when I move people from there [different constituency]. Then you go and say, 'Where's your card, where do you live?', somebody comes in and says 'I know him.' How can you challenge those things?" he quizzed.

He also noted that the reason why the Ghana Card was not used for the just-ended voter registration was because it would have led to chaos due to the closeness of the 2024 election was close.

He stressed that the use of the Ghana Card would ensure that Ghanaians choose their leaders and not foreigners.
