Mr John Kwao Sackey, Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, on Tuesday said the desire to build a Better Ghana by President John Evans Mills would be greatly enhanced by the sustenance of peace and democracy through national unity.
He said the Government would not renege on its responsibility of ensuring democracy through freedom of speech, good governance and provision of basic infrastructure for Ghanaians.
Mr Sackey made the observation at a parade to mark Ghana’s 55th Independence Anniversary celebration in the Municipality.
It is on the theme: ‘Sustaining Peace and Democracy for National Unity and Development’.
He said Government was committed to provide the necessary logistics and inputs for the Electoral Commission (EC) and ensure an even playing field for all political parties, during Election 2012.
“As citizens of Ghana, we must demonstrate our civic responsibility and commitment towards ensuring a peaceful election.”
Mr Sackey announced that the Municipality had over the past years made headway in its development agenda in the provision of school infrastructure as outlined in the government's manifesto.
“We inherited some school projects at various stages of construction in the Municipality, some were at various levels of completion while progress on others was not the best”.
He explained that with a determination, the assembly continued those projects, and completed and handed over two 3 storey block for the La Nkwantanang and Fire Armour cluster of schools, which had eased the decongestion at La Nkwantanang School while the Fire Armour no longer operate the shift system.
Mr Sackey noted that students in the Municipality performed excellently at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and was fifth in the country and first in Greater Accra Region.
On the School Feeding Programme, he said, the assembly decided not to relocate the beneficiary schools but took the initiative to sponsor eight new schools and now feeding 3,377 pupils.
Mr Sackey commended teachers in the Municipality for their hard work and dedication to duty, and called on them not to rest on their oars.
He called on all well-meaning Ghanaians who had attained the voting age to participate in the upcoming biometric voter registration exercise to in order to vote during the December polls.
Ms Florence Esi Damali, Ga East Municipal Director of Education, said Ghana could boast of relative peace for decades now, despite some turbulence in the democratic history after independence.
She appealed to all and sundry especially, the political parties and their supporters to see themselves as one people working towards reducing poverty and the provision of quality education regardless of their political affiliations.
