Students and staff of Pentecost University College (PUC) over the weekend teamed up with waste management company Zoom Lion to rid some parts of Accra of filth.

Residents of Sowutuom, Santa Maria and adjoining communities had their chocked drains cleared and heaps of refuse collected by the students, staff of PUC and workers of Zoom Lion. The exercise which marked the first anniversary of the national sanitation day, according to the University authorities, is to help avert the perennial floods the communities experience whenever it rains.

Speaking to Starr News after the exercise, the Rector for the Pentecost University College Rev. Dr. Peter Ohene-Kyei called for continuous public education on sanitation.

According to him, the exercise will be held regularly to ensure a clean environment.

“The SRC is going to plan to make this a regular affair where students will be able to help clean the communities in which they live and by doing that you inculcate also into the students the need to keep their environment clean; to spearhead cleaning exercises when they go back to their town and their villages and wherever they live,” he stated.

Dr. Ohene-Kyei also decried the Ghanaian attitude of always looking up to the government when it comes to issues of sanitation.

“We must do our part and educate ourselves. As we do as you are aware, we educate people around the need to keep their environment clean, not to throw litter around and things like that. It will take time but certainly I’m sure we will be able to make it,” he added.

The Pentecost University College affiliated to the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is marking its 10th anniversary this year. The institution is shifting focus to more science related courses to cater for the deficit in the sector.
