People and Places: Journeying with the dead

The loss of a loved one or family member comes with a rush of overwhelming sadness and even worse is the day of final interment.

Death and funeral rites represent the last rite of passage of the human race and various cultures have their own unique way of celebrating them.

Reflecting in a somber atmosphere is what some prefer, others however would prefer ‘loudness’ and ‘recklessness’ as a way to get over their pain.

Screeching of cars, loud music and the ‘wild’ display of emotions by mourners coming in for their ‘corpses’ is a peculiar sight for residents of South La whose homes are just meters away from the hospital.

It almost appears as though they want to ‘go along to the graves’ with their deceased persons.

In this edition of ‘People and Places’, our cameras focus on the unusual ‘rites’ people perform while escorting their dead. Focus also will be placed on the hospital morgue situated close to homes in the area and the ‘smoking culture’ residents have to endure from the hospital’s morgue.
