The beautiful story of the Northern people and their rich ‘Fugu’ culture is brought to light in this edition of GhanaWeb’s People and Places.

The strikingly artistic cloth is derived from carefully woven yarns, featuring different designs, each with its distinctive significance and implication.

The ‘Fugu’ can be likened to what the Ashantis call the ‘Kente.’ Made by the originators, including the Dagombas, Gonjas, Waalas, and others, the cloth and dress are now widely patronized by all tribes across the country.

It takes various forms, including hand-woven and sewn smocks, shirts, trousers, and hats for men, as well as dresses for women and children alike.

This piece provides details about the history, making, wearing, and significance of these rich Ghanaian garments from the three Northern Regions.
