People of Nobewam up in arms against chief

Nobewam (Ash), Nov 17, GNA - Scores of people at Nobewam in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality on Tuesday protested against the alleged indiscriminate sale of their lands by their chief and his failure to account for the proceeds.

They accused Nana Adu Gyamfi of having sold a number of building plots to developers, including an area earmarked for a market and the community teak plantation.

Additionally, they alleged that the chief has leased land to a mining company and pocketed the money from the transaction. For more than two hours the protestors carrying placards and chanting slogans, marched through the streets of the town to denounce the actions of Nana Gyamfi.

They later presented a petition to the Omanhene of Juaben, the overlord of the Nobewam Stool and this was received by Nana Siaw Agyemang, the Akwamuhene of Juaben.

They appealed for the Omanhene's intervention to compel Nana Gyamfi to account for "every pesewa" realized from the land sale. The money, they said, should be used to support the development of the community but not the personal comfort of the chief. Nana Agyemang called for calm and promised that Daasebre Otuo Serebuo, the Omanhene, would act promptly on their petition. Nana Gyamfi is out of town and could not be reached by the Ghana News Agency for his reaction. 17 Nov. 10
