Sankore (B/A), Aug. 28, GNA - The people of Sankore in the Asunafo District of the Brong Ahafo Region have been asked to bury their political differences and work together towards the development of the area.

Mr. Eric Opoku, Deputy Regional Minister for Brong Ahafo, who made the call, reminded the people that disunity retards progress. He said that political parties were expected to use power given them by the electorate to promote national development and not to seek sectional interest.

Mr Opoku made the appeal at a durbar of the chiefs and people of Sankore, which preceded a sod cutting ceremony to begin work on the 10-kilometre Nyamebekyere-Sankore road and the Buako road in Sefwi-Wiawso District in the Western Region. The contract would be executed by Dynamic Star Company Limited of Sunyani and Ba-Iseng Limited in Accra. The GHC4.2 Million project is being financed under the GHC10,674,350.32 Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Funded Roads Improvement Projects (CFRIP) in selected cocoa growing areas in Brong-Ahafo and Western Regions. The CFRIP project seeks to help facilitate the evacuation of cocoa from producing areas to the ports for export. Other cocoa growing areas in Nkoranza South and Asutifi Districts in the region are expected to benefit from the CFRIP project.

Mr. Opoku explained that by their mandate politicians were primarily obliged to initiate and execute developmental projects to improve the welfare of the people and not to seek their selfish interest. He expressed regret that some people had allowed disunity to affect development.

The occasion coincided with the presentation of sewing machines to 33 young ladies who had completed a six-month apprenticeship training in dressmaking under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP). Mr Opoku advised the beneficiaries to set up their businesses and warned that anyone who would be caught selling her machine 93will be arrested and prosecuted".

He broke the ground for the construction of GHC695, 000.00 one-storey boys' dormitory for Sankore Senior High School. Mr. Atta Bosompem, District Chief Executive for Asunafo South, advised the youth to avoid reckless lifestyles and to channel their potentials into productive activities. Nana Opoku Worae, Brong-Ahafo Regional Coordinator for NYEP, said that government had created additional modules under the programme to create more job opportunities for the youth. Nana Worae said a hair dressing module would be created. Nana Antwi-Boasiako, Akwamuhene of Sankore asked the people to co-operate with the contractors to ensure the successful completion of the project.
