PeriodMate Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to minimizing the depressing issues of period poverty amongst girls in underprivileged communities in Ghana has donated sanitary pads worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to female students of Akropong School for the Blind and Senior High Technical School for the Deaf, Akwuapem Mampong in the Eastern Region.

Donating the items to the two schools, Co-founder of PeriodMate Ghana, Ms. Adwoa Agyekum observed, "In many countries around the world, girls drop out of school at puberty because they lack access to affordable, hygienic menstrual products. In rural villages throughout Ghana, many girls turn to rags, putting them at risk of infection."

"Worse still, girls often don’t understand their periods. They have many questions that even their older counterparts are unsure how to address. This confusion partially stems from the cultural stigma on menstruation, " she said and asked, "What if there was a way to improve women’s health and bodily awareness, help girls go to school, help women earn wages, and break the taboo surrounding menstruation?"

According to Ms. Agyekum, PeriodMate is their solution. They are committed to helping vulnerable young girls in deprived communities by easing the material challenges that the natural cycle comes with.

Ms. Mahela Narh, Headteacher, Akropong School for the Blind and Mr Joseph Sam, Headteacher, Senior High Technical School for the Deaf, Mampong Akuapem received the donations on behalf of the students.

Accepting the items, the two expressed gratitude on behalf of their female students and applauded PeriodMate for their thoughtfulness and commitment to helping make the world a better place for young girls in underprivileged communities.

On her part, the Girls' Prefect of the Akropong School for the Blind, Ms. Esther Boadu expressed her profound appreciation to PeriodMate Ghana for their kind gesture and asked God's blessing for them.

This year's donation, according to PeriodMate Ghana, is sponsored in part by IBSS Corporation, a women-owned small business located in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.

IBSS is focused on Cybersecurity, Enterprise IT, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Professional and Management Consulting.
