Following recent fire outbreaks that have resulted in significant losses, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced a series of new measures aimed at enhancing fire safety in the nation’s major markets.

The GNFS outlined steps to improve market safety and provide 24-hour fire coverage in a statement released on January 14, 2025. To ensure a prompt response to potential fire incidents, personnel and fire apparatus will now be stationed at markets across the country from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily.

A specialized task force has also been created to patrol the markets every day to monitor fire safety and ensure quick action in the event of a fire.

The GNFS also plans to establish fire posts or units in strategic markets nationwide. These units will focus on enforcing fire safety procedures, conducting regular inspections, and enhancing fire safety education.

“The Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, has instructed that personnel and fire appliances be deployed at various markets across the country from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily to provide round-the-clock fire coverage,” the statement emphasized.

The Ghana Police Service, National Security, and market authorities will collaborate with the GNFS to strengthen these efforts to ensure efficient monitoring, security, and swift response to fire-related incidents.

The GNFS urged the public, market regulators, and traders to support the initiative and adhere to fire safety regulations. It called on all parties involved to take an active role in making markets across the country safer.

These measures are intended to reduce the frequency of market fires, protect people and property, and foster a safety-conscious mindset among market patrons.
