Photo and Poetry Exhibit to Present Ghana to the World

Online Show to be followed by Gallery Exhibit in U.S.

American poet and artist Van G. Garrett, in partnership with One Ghana, One Voice, Ghana's premier online poetry magazine, will be launching his new photo and poetry exhibit “Snaps of Ghana” online on August 1st.

Photos and poems from Garrett’s 2008 travels in Ghana will be displayed at http://oneghanaonevoice.com throughout August, with a new photo and poem being displayed every two days. Later in 2009 the same photos will be displayed in an exhibit in Houston, Texas.

This will be the first time Garrett’s photography from Ghana will be put on display. His earlier works have been displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the University of Rhode Island, and Rice University, among many other locations.

When asked about the project, Garrett asserted, “I am so happy to celebrate my love for Ghana with others. The photos and poems reflect a studied and artistic way of life that some do not, unfortunately, associate with the African continent. I hope that my words and my images cause people to think about a wonderful place that one can only hope is honoured with my words.”

The project aims to promote Ghanaian arts and culture more widely both in Ghana and around the world. Garrett and One Ghana, One Voice also hope to stage an exhibit in major cities in Ghana. Van G. Garrett an internationally celebrated artist and author. Among his many accolades, he has received a Dr. Kwame Nkrumah International Study Scholarship and a Hurston/Wright Fellowship for poetry. He was the first student to receive a graduate certificate in African American Studies from the University of Houston.
