Pito seller killed on her verandah

Yaga (UW), Feb. 17, GNA - One woman died on the spot and another seriously injured and admitted at the Jirapa St. Joseph's Hospital when a Nissan Patrol Ambulance with registration number GV 8551 C ran over them on an open porch where they were selling pito at Yaga near Babile. Inspector Daniel Dorkpoh, Upper West Regional Public Relations Officer of the Regional Police Command, said the deceased was Ntie Dontong, a pito seller while the injured woman had been identified as Nantiere Kaaronzie.

He said Mr Abudlai Saakah, driver of the ambulance which belongs to the Wa Regional Hospital was returning from Nandom after conveying a corpse there.

Inspector Dorkpoh said when the driver reached a section of the road at Yaga, the vehicle entered a pothole and rendering the steering mechanism uncontrollable.

He said the ambulance subsequently skidded off the road and knocked down the two women who were selling pito on the open porch, killing Madam Ntie Dontong instantly.

The PRO said the driver who was detained in police cells had been released on bail to report periodically to the police.

Inspector Dorkpoh said the body of the deceased had been released to her family for burial after a post-mortem.

The PRO warned drivers in the region against speeding as the phenomenon has been established as a major cause of accidents in the region.
