Accra, Aug. 9, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday said plastic waste in the country was a bane of the economy despite its numerous benefits.
He said even though there would not be a total ban on the use of plastic, Government was not turning a blind eye to the problem and was desperately trying to find a solution to it.
President Kufuor was answering questions from journalists at the third media encounter since he occupied the seat of political authority at the Castle Osu, Accra.
He said measures by the Government to solve the plastic menace especially in the cities had not worked and called for discipline among the citizenry to ensure environmental sanity.
"The call for discipline in the society has fallen on deaf ears," he said . He said the Minister of Trade and Industry recently visited Japan and was exposed to a scientific approach on how plastic waste was reprocessed and that could be an option.
President Kufuor said even though a scientific approach to the problem was expensive the Government was considering using that to solve the problem.
