Winneba (Central Region) 19 May, '98 Mr Emmanuel Kwaku Bledjumah, district Police Commander for Awutu-Effutu-Senya, has commended the people of Winneba and its environs for their continued assistance in the security services in the performance of their duties. Mr. Bledjumah was addressing residents of Okyereko, near Winneba, who successfully arrested and handed over to the Winneba Police two metal scrap dealers from the Accra timber market for allegedly stealing 32 pieces of metal pipes belonging to the state. The suspects are Wofa Sadiu, 27, from Ajumako-Kokoben in the Central region, and Obiri Gyaketey, 28, from Awukugua, Akwapim in the Eastern region. According to Mr. Bledjumah, the pipes which are being used as protective bars for the Ayensu bridge, near Okyereko, were removed by the suspects last Saturday night and hidden in the bush. The suspects came back with a car on Sunday to convey their booty to Accra, but the villagers, acting upon a tip-off arrested them. The police commander noted that if people "would continue to co-operate with and assist police, as some drivers and ordinary citizens in the area have been doing of late, the crime wave in the country could be considerably curtailed. Mr. Bledjumah said the two suspects would be put before the Agona Swedru circuit court after investigations. gri
