The police council among other things will at its maiden meeting under the current government today consider a revision of the GHS2,000 paid to dependents of police officers killed in line of duty.
Minister of Interior, Ambrose P Dery who gave the hint, observed that the amount is woefully inadequate to cater for the dependents of killed cops and underscored the need for them to be properly motivated in order to give off their best to the country knowing very well their dependents will be well catered for when they die in line of duty.
“I am very concerned about it. The system they had is just to give GHS2,000 to the families but going forward in line with the transformation agenda we are working on, we want the kind of insurance policy to be adopted so that adequate compensation is paid to the families. The form it will take is still under discussion”, he revealed in an exclusive interview with mynewsgh.com.
Until discussions and modalities implementation are completed, Mr Ambrose Dery said there are transitional arrangements where more money could be paid to families of killed police officers.
“The police itself is talking about transitional arrangements where they can give more money than they you used to do. We need to motivate our people …people die in line of duty must get the due recognition which they have done by building a monument somewhere where we will put their names, but more importantly, their dependents must be protected from the loss a bread winner brings and that is what is keeping our attention”, he emphasized.
