The Police Service is to increase its workforce by 4,000 next year. Two thousand officers will be recruited this year and the remaining 2,000 in 2004. The police service currently has a workforce of 16,000 and with Ghana’s population standing at about 20 million, the police-population ratio is now one is to 1,250 people.

But the international ratio projects one police officer to every five hundred people. The Inspector General of Police, Nana Owusu Nsiah told journalists at media interaction today that government has given the green light for the four thousand more officers to be recruited.

The IGP said there has been a general recruitment exercise since February this year in all the regional capitals to take on qualified applicants. He also asked media organisations to thoroughly cross check information about security agencies and their activities before publicising them. The IGP said if the right processes are not exhausted the security and stability of the country risks being undermined.
