Accra, Jan. 10, GNA - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Monday presented 554 bags of cement and 573 pieces of iron rods worth about 70 million cedis to the Ghana Police Service to enhance construction work on a Secretariat for the Women and Juvenile Unit (WAU) of the Service.
Nana Owusu-Nsiah, Inspector General of Police (IGP), said when the three-storey secretariat was completed, it would ensure effective co-ordination of affairs of WAJU and further ensure institutional efficiency among all other branch units.
He stated that WAJU, which currently had 19 branches nationwide, had since its establishment worked very hard with support from all other sectors of the Police Service to protect the rights of women and children.
The IGP, therefore, called on all other donors who made various pledges towards the construction of the secretariat to redeem them to ensure a timely completion of the project.
He thanked UNICEF for its continuous support towards the fight for the recognition and protection of the rights of women and children. The IGP called on individuals and corporate organizations to assist in the construction of the Secretariat.
Mr Iddris Abdellah, Assistant Child Protection Officer, UNICEF, said the donation was in fulfilment of a pledge made at a recent donor's conference held by the Police Service and pledged further support. He stated that the issue of child rights protection was the number one priority area of the UNICEF and it would therefore support every project that was geared towards ensuring the realization of their agenda.
