Wechiau (U/W), Sept. 10 GNA - The Vieri Agricultural Training School in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region would be turned into a Police Training School, Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama announced at Wechiau on Sunday.
The Vice President, who is on a four-day working visit to the Region, announced this at a durbar the Chiefs and People of the Wechiau Traditional Area organised in his honour.
He said the decision to open the new Police training school in the Region stemmed out of the priority the Government attached to issues relating to security especially in beefing up the manpower needs of the Service.
Alhaji Mahama also announced that a Police station would also be opened in Wechiau, the capital of the new Wa West District before the end 2006.
He later inspected the newly opened district administrative office complex, residential accommodation projects for the staff of the Assembly and a nutrition rehabilitation centre project for the District. He appealed to the people in the rural areas to give their support to the New Patriotic Party Government as it had demonstrated through its achievements in the rural areas that it had truly served them well. The Vice President said the roads in Wechiau would be tarred come next year.
The Regional Police Commander, George Ankobil confirmed to the Ghana News Agency that renovation work to the structures are already in progress adding that the buildings would deservedly serve their intended new role.
Already, there are similar regional police training schools in Ho; Bolgatanga; Koforidua; Sunyani and Kumasi. Alhaji Mahama addressed similar durbars organized in his honour at Dorimon and Kaleo by the chiefs and people of the two traditional areas.
Addressing the durbar at Dorimon, Alhaji Mahama announced that a contract had been awarded for the construction of a bridge at Yigieh, which connects the area with Wechiau, at a cost of two billion cedis. At the Kaleo durbar, the Paramount Chief appealed to the Vice President to help to get a bus for the Kaleo Secondary Technical School. Alhaji Mahama announced that 15 additional Metro Mass Transport buses would be allocated to the Region before the year ends in addition to the seven buses already operating in the Region.
At all the durbars the various Paramount Chiefs praised the Government for fulfilling most of the promises it made to the people during the 2004 electioneering campaigns. 10 Sept. 06
