Former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and current National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Tamale Central Constituency, Hon Alhaji Innusah Fuseini has described modus operandi of police in arresting suspected and hardened criminals as a comic relief.
“Clearly, the way we are attacking it is like Fire Service method of dealing with the problem. Fire erupts and you go there and deal with the problem and you come to rest”, the lawmaker observed.
“The vulture will know it will be beaten by the rains and curse the day it never builds the house and promises before the next rainy season it will build a house and immediately the rains stop it forgets it was beaten by rains and thinks of when will the rains come again” Hon. Innusah Fuseini related to how crime is dealt with in the country.
He, therefore, laid blame on the doorstep of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the recent attacks on personnel and the situation personnel currently find themselves in.
“Police have failed, refused and neglected to access the security situation and the current threat facing them”
“When was the last time police went for gun shooting training? …Even the IGP when was the last time he went for training?”, Hon. Innusah Fuseini quizzed on Joy FM’s weekly news analysis show Newsfile.
IGP David Asante-Apeatu has said the Police Service lacks the requisite safety equipment to protect its officers.
“We are always working in danger. We very much appreciate it. This is not peculiar to Ghana alone and it behooves us to manage this situation to the best of our abilities. The people of our country are peace-loving people that is why they have enacted laws and they have asked us to champion in ensuring that there is peace in the society so that they can go about their business; and we the champions if things like these can be done to us then what cannot be done to the ordinary person?” he asked
A security expert with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has warned there will be more attacks on security personnel unless Ghana’s security strategy is reformed.
Dr. Kwesi Aning explained the current security structure is vulnerable in the face of the changing security situation in the country.
The gunning down of the police come at a time the service has set aside a date to seek divine intervention calling on men and women at police churches nationwide to commit Sunday, February 4, 2018, for prayers
The prayers are to call for “safety and divine protection” of all police, according to an invitation letter from the Religious Directorate of the Service to media houses
“This has become very necessary and imperative considering the recent spate of adversarial killings of service officers… It behooves upon us as the clergy of the Service to beseech the divine protection for all serving officers” the statement said.
