Police arrest driver with suspected dried leaves at Bawku

Bawku(UER), March 16, GNA - The police at Bawku have arrested Joseph Gullibe 33, a driver for allegedly carrying three jute sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp on his 33-seater Benz bus from Kumasi.

Gullibe denied ownership of the sacks and alleged that they belonged to a passenger who fled when the police arrived. Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Bawku, Police Inspector Andrews Yirenkyi, said security agencies at Bawku had a tip-off that a broken down vehicle at the outskirts of Bawku had sack loads of dried leaves on board.

He said the vehicle with registration number NR 5841 C was traced to an area near the Bawku Secondary School where it was under repairs with some stranded passengers.

Police Inspector Yirenkyi said after a search on the bus the two sacks were found and when the driver was questioned, he said they contained used clothing for an orphanage.

He said during further interrogations, the driver told the police that the owner of the sacks took to his heels upon seeing the police and he was arrested with the vehicle to the police station.
