Umaro Wahab Mohammed, a 44-year-old unemployed man, has landed in court after he was caught defiling a minor in her sleep.

The accused person could have gotten away with the offence, but for some eye-witnesses who allegedly saw him in the act and started screaming before the victim, a head porter (Kayayo) woke up and realized she had been defiled.

Strangely, the victim, after reporting to the police for the first time, failed to return to the police to assist in investigations but switched off her mobile phone and has not been seen since.

Mohammed was put before an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava where he was charged with defilement of a female under 16 years.

He denied any wrongdoing and has been remanded in police custody to re-appear on February 12 2013.

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer, DSP Ohene Boadi told the court that the victim is a 'Kayayo' who carries goods from one place to the other around various markets and sleeps at Mallam Atta Market, Accra, and has no fixed place of abode.

He said the accused person is 44-year-old who also has no fixed place of abode adding that on January 21, 2013, at about 10:00am the victim was awakened from her sleep by the shouts of persons nearby only to realize that Mohammed had had carnal knowledge of her.

According to him, the victim noticed blood stains in her underwear after she woke up and was assisted by one Musah Abdulai who also took the accused person along with her and they reported the matter to the Nima Police.

Furthermore, he said the police gave a medical form for the victim to go to hospital but the victim together with some family members took the form and failed to return to the police and switched off their phones.

Mohammed, in his cautioned statement, denied the offence and said he did not use his penis, rather "I inserted my right finger into her vagina".

He said the accused person was consequently arraigned before the court while the police are frantically searching for the victim.
