The Ghana Police Service is urging private security companies to desist from using uniforms that resemble that of the police.

According to DSP Cephas Arthur, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, the practice "poses some security challenge to the maintenance of law and order" in the country.

He was speaking in an interview with Kwaku David on the Xpress Breakfast Show on XFM 95.1 and stressed; " we are not saying that personnel of the security companies are criminals, but some of them take their police look - alike identity to undertake businesses and activities reserved for the police and also to arrogate themselves with the powers that come with wearing police uniforms and sometimes go overboard."

DSP Cephas Arthur advised private security companies to adhere to the law that allows the IGP to evaluate uniforms before approval for usage by the companies.

On security arrangements during the yuletide, the PRO says the police activated 'Operation Father Christmas' which entails several aspects of protection and maintenance of law and order.

He therefore entreated the general public to also put in place their own security measures and collaborate with the police by providing necessary information to help curb crime.
