KUMASI, Ghana -- The Police have been commended for bringing the spate of serial killings of women, which threatened to undermine the progress of the country, under full control.

Mr Opoku Agyemang Prempeh, Managing Director of Lakayana Company, a private Business Consortium based in Kumasi, said apart from this, the Police and Military deserved to be lauded for their joint efforts that had resulted in controlling the rampant armed robbery that engulfed the country in the recent past. Mr Prempeh, who is also the Executive President of the Centre for Moral Education (CEME), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), committed to the promotion of moral education, made the commendation at a press briefing held in Kumasi on Wednesday to explain strategies being adopted by the CEME to complement national efforts at ensuring peace.

He observed that the success chalked by the security agencies in instilling sanity into the society was not done in isolation of civil society, but rather through the co-operation and support of members of the public by way of volunteering information to them.

"Without security, there will be no peace and as such no individual or organisation will be able to operate or survive, hence the need for all and sundry, to be fully committed to assisting the security agencies in all forms in the discharge of their mandatory duties", he stressed.

Notwithstanding the lofty and positive achievements made by the Police, Prempeh observed that the corrupt nature of some Police officers, coupled with indiscipline among a few of them were fast threatening to erode the respect, dignity and glory associated with the service.

In this connection, Mr Prempeh made an appeal to the Police Service Council to swiftly institute more pragmatic measures that would help relieve the Service of such bad nuts, before they succeeded in completely tarnishing its hard won good reputation.

He also proposed to the Council to consider reviewing the selection process of candidates to be recruited into the service, by ensuring that apart from high academic qualification, such candidates should also have sound morals, be physically fit and patriotic.
