Police complains of bail for armed robbers

Accra, Aug 23, GNA - The Police on Monday complained that the courts are not helping with the fight to flush out criminals by granting bail to armed robbers instead of remanding them in custody.

Speaking in an interview in Accra with the GNA, Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) Awungbutoge Awuni, Director of Public Relations, said the quick bails granted make the criminals go back to continue with their activities.

DSP Awuni said a person involved in a case like rape, armed robbery and murder should under normal circumstances not be granted bail but the courts are doing just that.

He said "just as there are bad Policemen in the system, who take bribes, there are also bad magistrates."

" Can you imagine that some magistrates, who should sit on genuine criminal cases tell the two parties to go and settle the matter at home ".

DSP Awuni said the Police under such circumstances could do nothing since their duty is to hand over suspected criminals to the courts.

" If the Police say no bail and the magistrate grants it, then we have nothing to do. It is the legal system that has made it possible".

He said, even though, the Police cannot be found everywhere, they have been arresting hardened criminals and urged the public to volunteer information on armed robbers to the Police.
