A police constable, whose name has been given as Michael Kporyi, has been shot dead by robbers near Michel Camp in Tema
The robbers were said to be riding a motorbike. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Tema Police Command, ASP Joseph Darkwa, the officer was on patrol on his own motorbike on Monday night when he was shot by the robbers.
“The constable fell off the motorbike into a nearby gutter,” ASP Darkwa told journalists on Tuesday. Inspection of the body revealed that the police officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds on his chest and his eyebrow. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital.
The situation has led to fear within the Tema metropolis as six cases of robbery have been recorded in less than a month. Security expert Emmanuel Kotin has attributed the situation to mass unemployment in the system. He has also called for retooling of the Ghana Police Service as vehicles currently being used were made available eight years ago.
