Police did not shoot Abubakar

Accra, July 20, GNA - The Ghana Police Service, on Tuesday said that the late Rasta Jamal Abubakar died from drowning but was not shot by the Police.

A statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Zenge Cyprian in-charge of Public Affairs, issued in Accra, said that a post-mortem on the deceased was performed in the presence of his father, Mr Abubakar Musa, some relatives and the Police investigator.

It said that a successful pathology examination on the deceased took place on Wednesday, July 14, at the Police Hospital.

The statement said "After having satisfied themselves with the examination report, the corpse was released to the family on request for burial".

It said that the pathology examination, however, did not reveal any spot of gunshots as has been alleged by some people in the area.

The statement said "It is hoped that the report of the examination would settle the rumpus over the incident where several allegations have been made against the Police".

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command, in a statement, urged the public to exercise restraint when such issues occurred and allow the investigative process to proceed in order to ascertain the actual cause of incidents.

It recalled that on Friday, July 9, a team of Policemen from Nungua Police station went on an operation to arrest some suspected criminals at the Shinning Beach at Nungua.

The statement said that these suspected criminals on seeing the Police started to jump into the sea in order to escape arrest, and the deceased was one of those who jumped into the sea but got drowned and died.
