The Police Administration has condemned the assault on a police traffic warden on Friday by a group of motorbike riders around the Abbosey Okai Roundabout in Accra.

“The case is under investigation and all persons who took part in the assault or incited same would be arrested to face the law,” a Press release by the Police Administration said.

The statement added:” Any person who has information, photo or video of this incident is encouraged to send it to our inbox or through the whatsapp number 0206-63-91-21.”

Meanwhile, one person has been arrested in connection with the attack on the Police officer.

The Kaneshie Divisional Commander, ACP Faakye Kumi confirming the arrest in an interview with Graphic.com.gh said the suspect has been sent to the Kaneshie Police Station for questioning.

Eyewitness account

Multiple eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident said the traffic warden was assaulted by several persons in the cortège at the Kaneshie Roundabout after he prevented a man on a motorbike from blocking the road leading to Accra.

Mr Sampah, a worker at the Awudome cemetery said the standoff was resolved after several warning shots were fired by the Police.

He said close to 50 armed police officers managed to calm the situation after engaging the leaders of the mourners in a discussion.

“What happened here was not a small issue, it was a big action that could have led to war,” he said.

Another eyewitness said he heard multiple gunshots around the State Transport Corporation yard before the crowd petered out.

A group of motorbike riders on Friday morning, 21 June 2019 mercilessly assaulted a police traffic warden who was directing traffic around the Abbosey Okai Roundabout in Accra.

An eyewitness who narrated the incident to ClassFMonline.com said the only ‘crime’ of the police officer was that he dared to confront the bikers, who were in the dozens, about why they unilaterally, without recourse to him, stopped all vehicles from all sides so they (the bikers) could weave through the traffic with their corpse, which they were conveying to the Awudome cemetery for burial.

The “rowdy”, “blood-baying” bikers, according to the eyewitness, who was also affected by that particular traffic, sieged the officer and pounced on him with blows and kicks.

Not even the intervention of a fellow officer within the precincts could deter the assailant bikers.

“They would have killed the policeman” and his colleague, the eyewitness said, explaining that it was the timely intervention of another passerby police officer who was accompanying a bullion van of a private bank within the same area, that saved the others.

“The other officer fired two warning shots”, the eyewitness narrated, which, he continued, “caused the marauding crowd of bikers who were bent on killing the officers, to speed off”.

A police reinforcement team later got dispatched to the scene and chased after the bikers to the cemetery.

One of the police officers got a bloody face as a result of cuts he sustained from the biker mob.
