The Ghana Police Service has issued a firm warning to social media content creators who use their platforms to post threatening or criminal content, stating that such actions will no longer be taken lightly.

At a press briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah Akrofi expressed growing concern over the misuse of social media to spread fear, misinformation, and violent threats often disguised as harmless “content.”

“If you engage in any act, any behaviour, any conduct, in any shape or form that borders on criminality, the Ghana Police Service will fish you out, will pursue you, will get you arrested and bring you to face the full rigours of the law,” DCOP Ansah Akrofi warned.

She revealed that police have already arrested at least one individual who appeared in a masked video threatening to kill security personnel.

According to her, the suspect later returned online with what appeared to be an apology, claiming the video was only meant for content creation.

However, the Police Service made it clear that such pleas will not be considered as an excuse for behaviour that endangers public safety.

DCOP Ansah Akrofi also recalled a similar incident a few months ago, where a group of individuals dressed as bandits posted threatening videos aimed at the Ghanaian public.

Arrests were made in that case as well.

Beyond outright threats, the police have noticed a worrying rise in online activities that create unnecessary panic in communities and spread dangerous misinformation.

The Police Service has stepped up digital surveillance and online monitoring to keep Ghana’s social media space safe.

DCOP Ansah Akrofi urged content creators and ordinary users alike to be more responsible and think twice before posting anything that could cross into criminal territory.
