Police launch nationwide manhunt for NDC-NPP rioters in Mamobi

The Ghana Police Service has launched a nationwide manhunt for individuals responsible for the uproar between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Nima, a suburb of the nation's capital, Accra.

In a statement released on Sunday, October 13, 2024, the police assured that calm had been restored in the area.

The clash between members of the two major political parties resulted in nine individuals sustaining injuries.

"The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored calm in Mamobi, a suburb of Accra, following disturbances between NPP and NDC supporters that led to nine injuries," the statement read.

The Police also mentioned that seven of the nine injured individuals have been treated and discharged from the hospital, while two are still receiving treatment.

"Meanwhile, an intelligence-led operation is currently ongoing to get the perpetrators who have been identified by the Police arrested to face justice," the statement read.

Background:

Supporters of the NPP and NDC from Nima, Mamobi, and Newtown, all Zongo communities in Accra, clashed in the late hours of Sunday October 13, 2024.

Videos of the incident, which have gone viral, show the supporters of the two parties engaging in physical altercations and exchanging heavy punches. The clash escalated as gunshots could be heard.

One video from the incident captured people running for cover as the gunshots began. In another video, a man wearing an NDC t-shirt, allegedly hit on the leg by a bullet, was seen lying on the floor.

"The NPP members have shot an NDC man," a boy is heard saying in Twi as he is questioned by a woman.
