NDC PC for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a statement over the continued detention of an opposition Parliamentary Candidate.
It has been almost ten hours since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) called on supporters to besiege the Cantonments Police Station in Accra to demand the release of the NDC PC for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
She was reportedly invited by the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Friday (June 7) over a gun possession issue.
Her transfer to Cantonments to spend the night is what triggered calls for supporters to go to the station to demand her release.
She had days ago confirmed ownership of a gun retrieved from her vehicle in Kasoa, stressing that the registered firearm was to protect herself against the MP for the area, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
The NDC flagbearer and former President John Dramani Mahama has joined calls for the release of the PC via a post on social media.
"There is no justification for the decision by the Inspector General of Police George Dampare, on the orders of the National Security Advisor, Albert Kan Dapaah, to detain a Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in Police custody.
"This action, taken on the instructions of the National Security Secretariat, will needlessly raise the political temperature in the country and spark avoidable tension.
"The Police Service and the IGP must not allow themselves to be used to hang the peace and stability of our nation months before crucial national elections," his post read in part.
Other big wigs to comment on the issue include Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (North Tongu MP), Sammy Gyamfi (National Communications Director) and Edward Omane Boamah (Director of Campaign).
GhanaWeb can confirm that glass doors at the police station was smashed by some irate supporters while the main road in front of the station was blocked at a point with tyres being burnt on parts of the stretch.
