Police in Ho over the weekend raided a popular Indian hemp “wee-market” and arrested 19 men and a woman.

The drug peddlers had turned Kpako House and its environs behind the Metro Mass Transit main terminal into a 24-hour “wee” market and thereby making the area unsafe for residents.

Mr Alex Bedie, Volta Regional Police Commander who briefed the media on the operation, said criminals and drug dealers who patronize the place occasionally attacked residents and passers-by and make away with their belongings.

He said the situation had become so bad that some residents in the vicinity could not open their windows because anytime they did their rooms got filled with smoke from the smokers in the area.

Mr Bedie said there was a pathetic incident when a woman and her daughter who were residents in the area were embarrassed when they reported sick at hospital and were asked if they smoke the banned substance.

He said the situations kept getting worse hence the operation and the subsequent arrest and seizure of quantities of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from some of the peddlers.

In June last year, a swoop by the police on drug peddlers at the same place resulted in the death of a 19-year old Atsu Mensah.
