The Ghana Police Service has taken delivery of spare parts to repair more than 100 vehicles grounded over several years, Mr Peter Nanfuri, Inspector General of Police, announced on Wednesday. He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra that police mechanics throughout the country have been summoned to the base workshop in Accra to help repair the vehicles.
Mr Nanfuri said he has given them three weeks to put the vehicles on the road, and warned against any attempt to misuse or divert the parts. Mr Nanfuri said the police service is expecting 65 new vehicles that would be distributed throughout the country.
He dismissed criticisms that the four-wheel drive vehicles are not appropriate for police duties saying, "these are high speed cars that can chase criminals and are widely used in advanced countries for police patrols".
"They are robust and can easily go through rough roads and mud in pursuit of criminals." Mr Nanfuri said radio communication facilities would be installed in the vehicles to facilitate contacts during patrols. He said these new developments would improve efficiency in the service. "We are moving away from moving cars to cars that can chase criminals."
