Police retrieve weapons from Tema criminal gang

The Tema Regional Police Command has confirmed the retrieval of a cache of sophisticated weapons from a criminal gang led byone Dogo America who was killed in a shootout with the police on Tuesday afternoon.

DCOP George Tuffuor, the Regional Commander revealed to mynewsgh.com that Five AK 47 assault rifles, one SMG, 9 fully loaded magazines, unspecified quantity of ammunition and two shotguns were recovered from them at Washington House close to Ashaiman.

He revealed that “Dogo America” who is the leader of the gang tried to engage armed police in a shootout but was overpowered and died in the process.

Meanwhile five suspects including wife of the gang leader were apprehended during the operation and are currently in the custody of the police.

It was revealed that the deceased was a wanted person by the Tema Regional Police Command after he was reported to have engaged in series of criminal activities in the area including high profile robberies.

He is also reported to have played a role in the death of Constable Michael Kporyi of the Ghana Police Service, who was shot and killed at close range by some assailants who trailed him on a unregistered motorbike on Monday night close to Michel Camp.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 pm when two armed persons suspected to be members of Dogo America’s gang fired at him while he was on patrols.

It is not known the intent of his attackers but they were reported to have fled immediately he was gunned down from his patrol motorbike with registration number GP4350.

Nothing was taken away from him as one fully loaded AK47 rifle, one pepper spray; a pair of handcuffs and a torch light were found on him when his colleagues arrived at the scene.
