The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has stated unequivocally that the party is convinced that the police in Accra are taking over investigation into Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's accident because they want to absolve President Mahama.

The NPP’s 2012 running mate was involved in an accident over the weekend at Bole in the Northern Region. A day after the accident, the party’s General Secretary accused President Mahama, national security and the ruling party, NDC, of masterminding the accident.

Standing by his claims, Mr Owusu Afriyie, who is popularly known as Sir John, insisted on Joy FM’s Top Story Friday that nothing positive would come out of the police investigation.

He said his conviction was rooted in the seemingly “different interest of the police” in Accra - whom he claimed are only interested in the accident vehicle and not the victims - from their counterpart in Tamale whom he believed are “professional” enough to investigate the accident.

He suspected that the police in Accra are machinating “with the view to whitewash the president; that is their interest”.

Mr Owusu Afriyie said Thursday’s letter from the police demanding the executives of the NPP to produce the mangled vehicle was unnecessary, claiming the Northern Regional police command had a lead on where the vehicle was. Nevertheless, Sir John had in an earlier interview with Top Story maintained that none of the executives had knowledge of the whereabouts of the vehicle.

But the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Friday confirmed to Joy News that they have located and inspected the mangled vehicle of Dr Bawumia at a garage in La, a suburb of Accra.

“Anytime that Accra takes over these matters then that is the end of it…they will not get to the bottom of it,” he said.

Moreover, Sir John accused the police of lacking “the decency to write” back to the party to inform them that the car has been found.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued today, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia stated that he has been cooperating with the police since the accident happened and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the police investigation.

But when Sir John was asked if that reflects the party’s position, he replied: “Obviously Bawumia would be interested in that but we (the party) have our own view as to what happened; like I said these people would take over the matter and that would be the end of it, nothing whatsoever will come out of it.”
