Police vehicle in fatal accident

The Ghana Police Force at the weekend was hit by a bizarre news when its Formed Police Unit (FPU) armoured vehicle rammed into a garage in Accra where cars were located.

Four people, including a driver, were as a result injured, and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, Today has gathered

More than a dozen cars were also damaged beyond repairs.

According to an eyewitness, the driver lost control of the FPU while speeding from the Accra Girls Senior High School (SHS) to Dzorwulu.

The eyewitness described the scene as chaotic.

“It appeared the driver was dozing off when he slammed into the garage,” the eyewitness said.

The Greater Accra MTTD Commander, ACP Anderson Ackah, disclosed that investigations had started into the incident.

“We can’t assess anything right now because we just came on to the scene.

Meanwhile, the Police Service has promised compensation for the garage owners whose vehicles were damaged by the police crowd control vehicle.

“…since the Deputy IGP has visited them mine will just be a follow up. They’ve identified their various vehicles to us, so I’ve asked them that today, Monday, October 29, 2018 they should come to the Central MTTD with the various documents covering the individual cars for us to start to know who actually owns that vehicle and give statement to that effect,” ACP Anderson Ackah said.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo last week Friday presented some 200 vehicles to the Ghana Police Service.

The presentation formed part of government’s moves to equip security agencies with logistics they need to effectively discharge their duties.

While presenting the vehicles, the President urged the Police Service to “pay particular attention to the proper maintenance of these vehicles and use them to serve and protect the Ghanaian people.”

The President also told the gathering that government had committed resources to procure kits, gears and quantities of other essential equipment, as well as more vehicles for the Police.

President Akufo-Addo in February 2018, indicated that, the government was allocating some GH¢ 800million to the Ghana Police Service to ensure improvement in its operations

He said the amount would be used for the procurement of modern policing equipment and gadgets including helicopters and drones to enhance the capacity of the service in dealing with crime in the country.

Also during the presentation, the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, who was at the ceremony used the occasion to announce the promotion of some 795 Police officers whose promotions were long overdue.

Mr Dery said the Police Council approved the promotions, which dates back to 2017.

He said more promotions would follow suit.
