Police visibility to be reactivated - ACP David Eklu

The police visibility programme that saw many officers on the streets of major cities in the country will be brought back, a top official has said.

“Within a couple of months, there will be deployment to make the police more visible,” the official said on TV3 & 3FM’s The Key Points over the weekend.

ACP David Eklu, the Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, told host Abena Tabi that the move is one of the takeaways from a high-profile conference held in the wake of the recent killing of officers.

The latest lethal attack on police officers was at Gomoa Buduburam Camp in Kasoa, where two officers of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) were shot dead.

Sergeant Michael Dzamesi and Lance Corporal Mohammed Awal were the victims and already four persons including prime suspect Eric Kojo Duah have been picked up.

The crime ignited a conference held last week on the need for reforms in the Service.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, announced two days after the deaths that MTTD officers, who hitherto carried no arms, will be armed with bullet-proof vests, among others.

ACP Eklu added that more officers are going to be seen on the streets to boost visibility.

“It is a key thing we identified during the conference and it is going to be brought back immediately.”
