The Director of Public Affairs at the police headquarters, DSP Cephas Arthur, has told Peace FM in an interview that the police are conducting investigations into the death of Lawrence Adiase, a 19-year-old student of Have Technical Institute in the Volta Region.

Lawrence allegedly died in cells following an arrest that was made in an incident that ensued between his school, Kpando Technical School (KPANTECH) and Awudome Senior High School (AWUSCO).

According to reports, students of AWUSCO accused students of KPANTECH of stealing a digital camera which belonged to one of them. They reported the case to the police on duty that day and three students of KPANTECH were arrested.

Subsequently, two of the police who were left behind at the Kpando Agbenorxoe Grotto where the incident occurred, were assaulted by the students of KPANTECH because they were not happy with the arrest of their colleagues.

Reinforcement was called in and a lot more arrest were made. Lawrence happened to be among the students who were arrested.

According to cell mates of Lawrence, he died in cell; contrary to police reports that he died on their way to the police station.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa-kayi, DSP Cephas Arthur disclosed that a team belonging to the police intelligence and professional standards bureau have been charged to conduct investigations and come out with a finding which can possibly allay the fears in the hearts of family and friends.

“If the police are at fault, they will be dealt with…we will plead with Ghanaians and the students to be patient. We know it is heart-breaking but the police are seriously working on it to bring justice to the bereaved families. There are two versions of the story right now and that is why we need to do the investigations to establish the veracity of the claim being made by either sides. Very soon the truth will come out…” he assured
