Policeman who shot engineer is remanded

Sunyani, May 11, GNA - A Sunyani High Court on Wednesday again remanded Lance Corporal Ben Azagisnaba of the Ghana Police who shot and killed Mr John Tereku, a 45-year-old mechanical engineer of Oti Yeboah Complex Limited in Sunyani.

Azagisnaba, a member of a team of policemen who raided the Catering Rest House on April 25 following a tip-off that the late Mr Tereku was an armed robber and had threatened to strike in the regional capital was remanded in prison custody when he made his first appearance before the court last week.

The plea of the suspect has still not been taken and no charge has been preferred against him as Mr William Pobee, Principal State Attorney in charge of Brong Ahafo, said the police had not completed investigations.

The court, presided over by Mr. Justice L. L. Mensah, ordered that the body of Mr Tereku be removed from the Regional Hospital Mortuary in Sunyani and sent to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for autopsy.

"All the expenses of the post mortem must be borne by the state and not the family of the deceased", the judge added Mr Justice Mensah said after the post mortem the body should be brought back to Sunyani and handed over to his family for burial. He asked the police investigator to confer with family members of Mr Tereku and agree on a date for the post mortem and it should be before May 26, the date for the next hearing.
