Political Parties blamed for bloated voters' register

Tamale, Sept 25, GNA - Mr Issah Nasagri, Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has attributed the bloated voters' register to multiple registration, registration by under-aged persons and other forms of malpractice for which all the political parties should held responsible.

He said even though the legal framework for ensuring free and fair elections has been provided for under the constitution and the Act establishing the Electoral Commission, its implementation has run into problems because of the unco-operative attitude of the political parties and the citizenry as a whole.

Mr Nasagre was speaking at a day's workshop organised by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Church in Tamale to train people on poll-watching for this year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mr Nasagri expressed regret about the lukewarm attitude of most Ghanaians towards the EC in its effort to prepare the country for elections. He said the country's high illiteracy rate means that there is an unequal understanding of the whole electoral process and that is why the political system has not been fully assimilated by the majority of the people.

The Cathedral Administrator, the Very Rev Fr. Emmanuel Wedjang said it is the church's duty to equip its members to be responsive to their political needs.

He urged the participants to take the workshop seriously and to help train poll watchers at their parishes, stressing that when election results are not accepted because others feel cheated there can be chaos in the country.
