Political Parties call on University of Ghana to lift ban

on political party activities at the Campus.

Leadership of the Inter-party Youth Committee, IPYC, is demanding authorities of the University of Ghana to lift with immediate effect the ban on political party activities at the Campus.

According to the chairman of IPYC Ludwig Hlodze, the decision by the University of Ghana to ban activities of political parties on campus amounts to the stifling of the country's human resource and capital, because the University serves as a nursing ground for many political ambitions.The IPYC comprise youth organizers of all the major political parties in the country.

“First of all the universities are institutions of higher learning and they are supposed to train man power resource for this country. Human capital is very keen to this country”, he said.

He added, “the duty of the universities is not only to train people academically but to also train leaders for this country. Political party wings on campuses are channels for the political parties to train young people in various political ideologies, and to give them some sense of leadership at the student level”.

He gave some examples of student leaders who have ended up in parliament such as Mustafa Hamidu, Elvis Afriyie Ankra Okudzeto Ablakwa, Omane Buamah and Haruna Iddrisu.

“These are people who have gone through politics on their various campuses so you cannot bush away the fact that it is a very critical constituency for all the political parties”.

Mr.Ludwig Hlodze expressed disappointment in the directive by the university authorities saying, “we think that if even there is any difficulty, the university authorities must sit down with the various political parties on campuses and iron out issues. Come out with measures and disciplinary codes so that people will conform to it”.

He also disagrees with people who think political activities on campuses will cause confusion. “How many times have you heard that there has been violence on our campuses based on political activities? I am calling on civil society organizations, religious leaders and committee of vice chancellors to look into this issue”.

“We are going to meet as youth leaders of the various political parties and we will send a strong petition to them”. He added.
